Max DVD to AVI Converter is a DVD ripping software program that allows you to extract any of the video streams in a DVD and convert it into an AVI video file in an easy and fast way. It supports both DivX and XviD as the universally accepted codecs for AVI video streams, and MP3 for the audio stream.
Max DVD to AVI Converter offers a very important feature - it not only allows you to extract the video contents of a DVD, but it lets you also convert video folders (containing DVD data, e.g., IFO, BUP, and VOB files) into AVI. Its intuitive interface allows you to configure all the necessary parameters you need to get a resulting AVI file that matches all your needs.
As soon as you choose a DVD disc or folder, the program shows a list with all the titles in it - the larger one is automatically selected - so that you can choose one or more for extraction. When you click on a title, the program will show you a small preview of it on a frame-by-frame basis, with controls to manually select and see the different frames, but with no real video playback capabilities. Among the parameters you can configure, you can choose the audio and subtitle streams to include in the resulting file, the output video codec (DivX or XviD), the frame rate and its quality in Kbps, whether to keep or change the original size and aspect ratio - allowing you to input your own customized resolution -, the audio codec (only MP3 is available, even though the developer's site says that MP2 is also accepted), the number of channels, the sample rate and its quality, and even the volume level. In addition, there is also an "Options" window where you can set the default output folder, and whether to shut down the computer or open the output folder when the task is completed.
Once you have selected one or more titles and all the required parameters, you can proceed to the conversion process. The time this will take will depend upon your settings, specially the quality and frame rate. Unfortunately, the unregistered version of the program allows you to convert only 5 minutes of the original video.
